A census-designated place (CDP), Makawao is located in Maui County, Hawai'i, in the United States with a population of 7,297 as of the 2020 census. It is situated on the northwest side of Haleakala on East Maui and is known for being a center of the "Upcountry" region, an area mainly composed of agricultural and ranch land. The Makawao Forest Reserve is located east-northeast of the community.
6,327 individuals, 2,151 households, and 1,565 families were counted in the CDP as of the year 2000. There were 522.7 people per square kilometer (1,353.8 people/sq mi). At an average density of 475.5 per square mile (183.6/km2), there were 2,222 dwelling units. The CDP's population was made up of 40.54% Whites, 0.32% African Americans, 0.55% Native Americans, 17.04% Asians, 8.74% Pacific Islanders, 1.56% of other races, and 31.25% of people who identified as two or more races. 11.93% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
